Sugar is the greatest enemy of women and we’re all to blame, according to a new book.
“Sugar, fat, carbs and sugar have poisoned our brains and bodies,” said author and dietitian Dr Lisa Rader.
“The sugar industry and the sugar lobby is out to destroy women’s health and get us to eat more of it.”
The book Sugar Is The Enemy: The Sugar War by Lisa Rimmer is a comprehensive look at the sugar industry, its influence on politics, diet and fitness and the way the industry is fighting back.
The book examines the history of the sugar movement, from its beginnings in the US to its present day impact on public policy, and the industry’s response to the changes in food, nutrition and health.
“It’s a big deal that the sugar business is the largest consumer of our nation’s public health, and yet it’s one of the few industries that’s been able to get away with this for decades,” Dr Rader said.
“These are the real issues in this battle.
It’s not about whether sugar is good or bad.
It is about how we can stop the sugar from coming to our homes.”
Dr Rimmer’s book, released on Friday, will be a key book for anyone looking to lose weight and boost their health.
It was written with the support of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIFW), which has previously called on the government to address sugar in Australia.
“This book will serve as a useful reference for the health community, nutritionists, dietitians and others working with people who are trying to lose, manage or manage weight,” the AIFW said.
The AIFT said Dr Rimmers book would be “the first major work on the subject”.
“We want to make sure this book is read by people with a wide range of experience and knowledge about this important issue,” AIF chief executive Dr John Cawley said.
Dr Raders research found that people with the highest levels of sugar consumption were more likely to be overweight or obese.
She said sugar was the “biggest villain” in the book, because it was associated with an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes.
“People who have high sugar intake tend to have a lot of fat, whereas people who have low sugar intake have less fat,” Dr Cawleys research found.
Dr Caws research found people who ate sugar-sweetened beverages had a lower risk of developing diabetes and obesity, as well as having lower levels of HDL (high density lipoprotein), a measure of blood pressure.
The authors found that high sugar consumption was associated also with a “very low” risk of the metabolic syndrome, the group of diseases associated with cardiovascular disease.
Dr Soren Stojanovic, who co-wrote the book with Dr Rades research, said there was a lack of information about the link between sugar consumption and cardiovascular disease and its effects.
“We are seeing a lot more research on the health benefits of sugar,” she said.
“We know that sugar is the biggest enemy of our bodies and the health of our society, and there is absolutely no evidence that sugar causes cardiovascular disease.”
Dr Stojonovic said she was “shocked” that the Government was so reluctant to address the issue.
“I’m surprised that they’re not taking this seriously,” she told ABC Radio Melbourne.
“They don’t seem to understand that sugar isn’t a bad thing, it’s a natural ingredient.
It helps you to stay healthy.”
Dr Cavens said the industry needed to focus on helping people lose weight.
“You’re not going to get rid of the problem by having sugar in your diet,” he said.
He said sugar intake was a big contributor to a number of diseases.
“When we see people in the community who have had diabetes, who have heart disease, it is really important to understand why those people are having those conditions and what can be done about them.”
The government’s health minister, Peter Dutton, said he was “very concerned” about the rise in sugar consumption.
“There are many other ways to lose excess weight,” he told ABC radio.
“In fact, if you’re overweight, there are other ways of achieving the same or even better results, like exercise, dieting, eating less sugar and doing things to help your body stay healthy.”
